PROGRAM'S BACKGROUND

Steam stimulation or steam flooding technology is undoubtedly the most effective enhanced oil recovery (Thermal Technique) currently in use since its advent in 1959, steam process have quickly gained recognition as most promising technological achievement, possessing a definite potential for economic development worldwide. Currently, steam stimulation and steam flood projects are responsible for approximately 80% of the Enhanced Oil Recovery production in the United States. This growth has occurred over the past three decades despite the fact that the performance of the process has proven sensitive to factors such as reservoir heterogeneity, adverse mobility ratios, gravity override and steam channeling.

Steam flooding is traditionally used to recover oil by injecting steam into heavy oil reservoirs to heat crude oil and allow for its extraction, mainly, it is considered an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method and is the main type of thermal stimulation of oil reservoirs and it is currently used to unlock producing potential of carbonate reservoirs. Recovery by steam flooding is commonly used in heavy oil reservoirs containing oil whose high viscosity is a limiting factor for achieving commercial oil producing rates. It has also been considered, however, as a method for recovering additional light oil.
